HOW MANY DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS?

Unlike Easter or Thanksgiving, Christmas is a fixed-date holiday: it lands on December 25 every year, so only the weekday changes. That weekday matters in the U.S. — when December 25 falls on a Saturday, the federal holiday is usually observed on Friday the 24th; when it falls on a Sunday, it's observed on Monday the 26th. Banks, markets, and post offices follow the observed date, not the calendar date.

If your countdown includes gifts arriving by mail, subtract shipping time. U.S. carriers (USPS, UPS, FedEx) publish holiday shipping cutoffs each year, typically in mid-December for standard ground service — and those dates move up every year as volume grows. A safe rule of thumb: treat roughly two weeks before Christmas as your "order by" date for anything shipped standard, and check the carriers' published deadlines for the current year before relying on express options.

Because 25 December is fixed, the only variable is the weekday — and it decides how much of a break you actually get. A Christmas on Tuesday or Thursday creates the classic bridge day that most people take as leave. A Christmas on Friday or Monday gives a three-day weekend outright. And when it falls on a Saturday the federal holiday is observed on the preceding Friday, while a Sunday moves it to the following Monday — the date never moves, but the day off does. In 2026 Christmas falls on a Friday; in 2027 it lands on a Saturday, so the observed federal holiday shifts back to Friday 24 December.

The countdown most people feel starts well before December 25. Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, which puts it in late November or very early December — in 2026 it starts on Sunday 29 November. And the twelve days of Christmas run from 25 December to 5 January rather than up to it, ending at Epiphany on 6 January. Several Orthodox churches still follow the older Julian calendar for fixed feasts, which currently runs thirteen days behind the Gregorian one — so their Christmas falls on 6–7 January by the calendar on your wall. It is the same date in their reckoning, not a different holiday. Armenian Apostolic tradition observes it on 6 January for different historical reasons. The thirteen-day gap widens by a day roughly every century, since the Julian calendar treats every fourth year as a leap year without the century correction — the same drift that prompted the Gregorian reform in the first place.

Neither has a fixed date; both hang off Thanksgiving, which is the fourth Thursday of November. Black Friday is the day after, Cyber Monday the Monday following — so the whole shopping window slides by up to a week from year to year, and the number of shopping days between it and Christmas slides with it. Late Thanksgivings compress the season noticeably, which is why retailers watch the calendar as closely as they watch demand. Holiday travel congestion follows the weekday pattern rather than the date. The heaviest departure days cluster on the Friday and Saturday immediately before Christmas and the weekend after New Year for the return, with the days either side of the holiday itself usually quieter and cheaper. When Christmas falls midweek, the crush spreads across more days; when it falls on a Friday or Monday, it concentrates sharply into the adjacent weekend.
