Saying someone is 34.7 years old is mathematically tidy but practically useless, because months have different lengths. The calendar method used here counts full years first, then full months, then leftover days — the same way a doctor, a passport office, or a school registrar does it. That's why your age in days is never simply your age in years times 365.

About one in 1,461 people is born on February 29 and has no birthday in common years. There's no single global rule for what happens then: many U.S. states treat March 1 as the legal birthday for things like driver's licenses, while other jurisdictions use February 28. This calculator follows the common convention of rolling to March 1 in non-leap years, so a leap-day baby still ages exactly one year, every year.

The "age zero at birth" system feels universal but isn't. In the traditional East Asian reckoning still used informally in parts of the region, a newborn starts at one and everyone gains a year at New Year — so a baby born in December could be considered two years old within weeks. South Korea officially moved to the international system in 2023. If a form ever asks for your "international age," this is the number it wants.

Most of the time "about 40" is close enough. But a surprising number of rules turn on an exact date rather than a rounded year. In the United States you can vote at 18, rent a car without a young-driver surcharge at most agencies at 25, and stay on a parent's health plan until 26. On the retirement side, 50 opens catch-up contributions to a 401(k) or IRA, 59½ is when withdrawals from those accounts stop carrying the early-withdrawal penalty, 62 is the earliest you can claim Social Security, 65 brings Medicare eligibility, and 67 is the full retirement age for anyone born in 1960 or later. Required minimum distributions currently begin at 73. These thresholds get adjusted by legislation more often than people expect, so treat this as a map of where the cliffs are and confirm the current rule with the relevant agency before acting on it.

School enrolment, youth sports leagues, insurance quotes and many application forms don't want your age today — they want your age on a specific cut-off date. A child who turns five on September 2 may miss a kindergarten year that a child born a day earlier walks into. Counting in days turns up anniversaries the calendar hides. 10,000 days arrives at about 27 years and 4 months; 20,000 days at roughly 54 years 9 months; and 1,000 weeks lands a little past 19 years. People increasingly mark these instead of round birthdays, partly because they fall on ordinary days that would otherwise pass unnoticed — which is, more or less, this whole site's premise. The total days figure above updates the moment you change the date, so you can hunt for the next round number and then count down to it.

The reliable manual method is to subtract in three stages rather than one. Take the years first, then the months, then the days, borrowing when a column goes negative — exactly like long subtraction. Born 14 March 1990, calculating on 26 July 2026: the years give 36, the months give 4, and the days give 12, so 36 years, 4 months, 12 days. The trap is borrowing days, because you have to borrow the length of the preceding month, not a generic 30. That single detail is why hand calculations and official records so often disagree by a day.
